UED 102, 1st Class, Part 1: Getting Ready To Learn

Ahh, it is the first class of Study Skills. Honestly, I am looking forward to attend this class as it may help me to improve myself in terms of studying. When I was in school, I did not have a specific time to do my revision. I may do it early in the morning or even late at night, there's no in between. I did not have a certain type of way to study and always found myself studying the night before the exam.

On that day, all of the students were asked to go to Dewan Titiwangsa as the venue of the first class of UED 102. We were informed that some of the lecturers couldn't come to teach on that day. Therefore, the session was combined and were lectured by one lecturer.

Dr. Fauzi bin Azmi, the deputy rector of Uitm Pahang was assigned to give us input about the syllabus of Study Skills and also our lecturer for that day. He started the session by telling us the assignments and the topics that we were going to learn throughout this semester. Check out the topics:

Each topic will be lectured in different week by different lecturers. If you ask me, those topics are quite important and interesting. However, the one topic that catches my eyes is the fourth one; Time Management and Organizational Skills. It may help me in the future.

The session continued with the topic of the day, Getting Ready To Learn. This topic literally was all about the students who is currently transitioning from school life to college life. Although some of us may have been to boarding school before, but college life is a totally different experience compared to school life.

There were a few points that Dr. Fauzi compiled and list out in the powerpoint slides. The first one was “You spend less time in class”. It's true that in college, we have lesser time in class compared to the time we spend in school. We might spend 6 to 7 hours a day at school but in college, some of the days might not be as busy or as packed as the day before.

Next, college student will spend more time studying outside of the classroom. The lecturers might not teach everything in class, therefore we as the students should try and find out more about the topics that we learned on that day. This point is related to the next point, which is having to do more reading. Nevertheless, lecture and reading may not overlap 100%.

“College seems fun,” At least that was what we thought when we heard the next point, having fewer test. He snapped us back to reality where college students have more complicated assignments to do. Nonetheless, we have fewer daily assignments and they may not be checked.

Talking about assignments, we may not be reminded about due dates and exams. Absolutely no extensions on due dates. The instructors will not tell you what is exactly on the test. Instructors may not be trained in education. They do not tell you what notes to take and we might have an international instructor. The instructors will not spoil you like the teachers at school always do and you will only have a certain lecturers for a few months.

Classes, classes in college are a lot different from school. The classes here are bigger, means that more students in one class. More students also means more group assignments. Thus, we will have more group meetings outside of the class.

Moreover, when you are a college student, you are responsible for your own learning and behaviour. Your attendance may not be required but that does not mean that we can skip class for all we want. Since we are staying at the hostel provided, we will have not many reasons for excused absence. We might be living and studying in the same place too!

You can also drop a class if you are unsure of your capability to pass that class. However, we should always refer to our academic advisor regarding our academic.

Before the session ended, we were assigned to do this one task where it can determine our style of studying. I was excited to do so and please have a look at it:

After this class, I am aware of what is going to happen in my life for the next 5 years of my life. Adjusting from school life to college life may be hard, but the challenges and the obstacles are very enjoyable. The experience may not be exchange with any other experience in my life. I can not wait to face them 🙌
