UED102, 4th Class, Part 2: Goal Setting

*scream* FOURTH CLASS! It’s the fourth class of Study Skills, UED102. Three weeks down and three classes to go. But first, let’s talk about the fourth class, shall we?

As soon as our lecturer entered the class, the class went quiet. She didn’t look really intimidating or fierce, neither do strict. However, when she started talking, she reminded me of someone I know. But I couldn’t remember of anyone. 🤔

Madam Amira, our lecturer of the day didn’t start the class by talking about the topic. She started with talking about her life experience and some tips were given to us since we are now a college student. Halfway through the lecture, I thought that she kind of look like Siti Nordiana 😂. Her act, her voice and her little figure really reminded me of that famous singer.

Enough with the babbling, she started the class by introducing the topic for this class. The topic was Goal Setting and she said that this was a short topic yet a very important one. And by that, we should not play around and focus as this information can be used for our future.

Goal has its own meaning. Madam Amira told us about the real definition of goal; which is the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or a desired result. Goal can also be defined as the destination of a journey. That being said, goal is something that you want to achieve in your life.

Goal can be divided into two groups which were short term goals and long-term goals. These goals should obey the rule of 'SMART' where each letter have its own meaning:

A goal should be specific. By having a specific goal, it can motivate you to achieve it. As for example, instead of wanting a good result, we can specify it by wanting a specific grade; an A or a B. Goal should be measurable. It should be on par with your capability or within your strength. You should cut your coat according to your cloth and not aim for something that you can barely achieve.

Goal should also be achievable. You cannot simply put a high goal for yourself. Instead, set a goal based on what you have achieved in the past. This way, you will not be disappointed when you failed to achieve your goal. Furthermore, goal must be time-bound. It is advisable to have a target date so that you can focus on achieving your goal and wont slack around too much.

Next, goal must be relevant or realistic. By realistic, it means that a goal should not be something that you cannot achieve. As for example, it is hard to achieve A in Mathematics if you do not have a strong background in it. Instead, you must use the Five-Step Approach to setting goals. What are the Five-Step Approach of setting goals?

The first step is your goal statement. For your goal statement, write down what you want to achieve in your life. The second step is your obstacles. For this step, write down anything or everything that stops you or slows you down from achieving for goal. It does not matter if it involves people around you or maybe you, yourself. The third step is the resources available around you. This step helps you to plan your strategy to counter back the obstacles you are facing.

The fourth step is to review and revise your goal statement. Based on the obstacles and the resources around you, think wisely if you can achieve your goal or not. Adjust your goal statement according to your capability to achieve it. Lastly, polish your goal statement. Write down the final sentence of your goal statement. Tadaaa, now you have an effective goal statement! Well, let me share my goal statement for you guys based on the Five-Step Approach technique:

That’s it for today. See you next week! 🙈
